Water Features, Natural Stone & Breaker Walls
What it is
This category covers three things we often combine in one build: natural stone features that look like they belong on the property, water features designed to run reliably (not constantly needing attention), and breaker walls built to control erosion and hold back soil where water and slopes create problems. The goal is always the same create something that feels natural, works properly, and stays stable through Canadian seasons.
What we typically build
Most clients choose either a pondless waterfall that’s clean and low-maintenance, a single spillway/waterfall coming from a stone wall into a pool or basin, natural stone accents and steps that tie the patio into the landscape, or a breaker wall (often armor stone/boulders) to stabilize a slope or protect an edge from washout and erosion.
When you typically need it
You’ll want this service when you want a calming focal point near a patio without turning the yard into a “garden project,” when your slope or edge is eroding and needs a real fix, when you want a natural stone look that blends better than manufactured block in certain areas, or when you’re already doing hardscape and want one feature that finishes the space and makes it feel complete.
Why it’s worth doing right
Good stonework stays tight, level, and safe over time. Good water features run clean, don’t leak, and are built for easy access if something ever needs service. Good breaker walls prevent future washouts and protect your investment. And when all three are planned together, the whole yard looks intentional instead of “added on later.”
What to expect
We start by understanding what you want the space to feel like, then we check grades and water movement so the design fits the property. Next we prep the base properly so stone placement is stable and doesn’t shift. Then we set and lock the stone in place with tight fit and clean transitions. Finally, we finish the system circulation, basin details, grading, and tidy edges so it looks natural and functions the way it should.
Common questions
What’s the lowest-maintenance water feature?
A pondless waterfall or a simple spillway into a basin clean look, less to manage, easy seasonal care.
Will stone move or settle?
It can if it’s placed on poor base or unsupported soil, our focus is base prep, stability, and drainage so it stays tight.
Is a breaker wall the same as a retaining wall? It’s similar in purpose, but breaker walls are often larger natural stone/armor stone used for erosion resistance and heavy-duty slope control.
Can you do this with little to no plants?
Yes—many StoneArc builds keep it clean with mulch/stone and minimal greenery so the feature stays the focus.
Care and upkeep
For water features, keep the intake area clear, maintain water level during hot stretches, and do a seasonal shut-down/winterization so it’s protected through freeze-thaw. For natural stone and breaker walls, avoid aggressive pressure washing and don’t disturb the bedding/joints. After winter, do a quick spring check for any minor settling. If anything ever shifts, addressing it early is simple and keeps it from growing into a bigger fix.
